At just 25 years old, Jordan Rakei, a singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist of New Zealand origin now based in London, has carved out a special place among the promising talents of modern, open R&B, in tune with its time. He further develops this universe on Wallflower, his second album, available on September 22, 2017, from Ninja Tune. Jordan owes the soaring success of his young career primarily to himself. His exceptional musical talent (he writes, sings, plays most of the instruments on his records...) is combined with a relentless ambition to prove his status as a complete artist. A singular talent for songwriting revealed on his EP Groove Curse in 2014 and confirmed by the release of Cloak, his very first album, two years later. Widely supported by the specialized press, Cloak helped establish Jordan Rakei as a voice with already well-asserted talent, subtle songwriting, and astonishing sensitivity. Crowned with collaborations for Disclosure, Taku, FKJ, Tom Misch, and Richard Spaven, Jordan Rakei signed with Ninja Tune and immediately released a single in June 2017, Sorceress, the first track from his upcoming album. Drawing as much from essential modern R&B references (Frank Ocean, The Weeknd...) as from more subtle influences – jazz, psychedelic, or even reggae at times – hidden beneath his handcrafted productions, Jordan Rakei wraps it all in his delicate and airy voice, which he handles with undeniable ease.
