Designed and overseen by Joni Mitchell, "Joni's Jazz" reflects through 61 tracks the profound influence of jazz on her music. This edition features studio recordings, live performances, rare alternate takes, and bonus tracks from different decades and record labels. Notably included are two previously unreleased demos from 1980, "Be Cool" and "Moon At The Window," and contributions from some of Joni Mitchell's jazz collaborators, including Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and Charles Mingus. From "Marcie" (taken from "Song To A Seagull" in 1968) to "Summertime," captured live at the Newport Folk Festival in 2023, this project, like a musical self-portrait, presents Joni Mitchell in conversation with jazz throughout her life. It draws from the albums "Songs To A Seagull", "The Hissing of Summer Lawns", "Hejira", "Mingus", "Turbulent Indigo", and "Both Sides Now", among others, describing her musical evolution, as evidenced for example by the rhythmic layering of "Harry's House / Centerpiece", the bold experimentation of "The Jungle Line", the narrative scale of "Paprika Plains", and the airy feeling of "A Chair In The Sky".
