With Achlys, Jon Porras delves even deeper into the territories of texture, erosion, and sonic weight. Far from a spectacle, the album focuses on the slowness of the process: guitar, sub-bass, modular synthesis, and processed noises accumulate like sediments, creating compositions that advance like weather systems rather than traditional songs. Inspired by cinematic language, particularly the sound depth of the film El Mar La Mar, Porras works with superimposed layers, blurred cuts, and disjointed temporality. At the heart of the record lies a tension between form and formlessness: guitar pieces, initially composed then pushed through modular processing chains, see their original structure dissolve. Several tracks are superimposed without synchronization, allowing dissonance to guide the writing. Thus, melodic fragments haunt the intervals, creating an atmosphere between memory and distortion. Tracks like Fields or Holodiscus sketch a fragile warmth, while the title track or Before the Rite slide towards abrasive density and near-saturation. Composed at altitude, amidst purple storms, Achlys translates the listening of tree movement, between deep rumble and fragile cracks. This duality is found in pieces like Sea Storm, where the bass engulfs guitar shards. The album establishes itself as a crossing of shifting thresholds: light and shadow, structure and erasure, density and suspension. Nothing is fixed, everything seems to bear the trace of having been something else. A dense and atmospheric work, both tangible and elusive.
