Discourses, which continues and develops even further the methods and concepts introduced by the Norwegian pianist in the album Warp, offers a magnificent example. Based on the principle of sound resonances, Balke's piano music can be defined as a series of "soundscapes elaborated in layers" designed as "distorted reverberations and reflections of the world." A unique way that Jon Balke approaches the solo exercise blurs the boundaries between composition, improvisation, and sound design. At the base of the project, Balke relied on different considerations about language, perceiving the notions of discourse and dialogue as concepts in decline in the face of the flourishing of a rhetoric based on confrontation and conflict. Balke: "What ensures the fabric of the work, from beginning to end, is language. As the political climate hardened in 2019 with increasingly radical and polarized discourses, the lack of dialogue that I observed led me to the notions that I gave as titles to the tracks on the record." Discourses was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano in December 2019 under the artistic direction of Manfred Eicher.
