The Chandos label continues its fascinating exploration of the American repertoire and after paying tribute to Aaron Copland, the series allows us to discover the enfant terrible of American contemporary music, George Antheil, who passed away in 1959 leaving behind a protean body of work, with pieces like Ballet Mécanique, shockingly avant-garde at the time, inspired by the early ballets of Stravinsky. In a more conventional register, conductor John Storgards, at the head of the BBC Philharmonic, presents us with symphonies No. 4 and 5 and, in world premiere, the orchestral piece titled Over the Plains.
