Live In Kyoto 1978

Description

While English folk guitarist and songwriter John Renbourn is particularly known for his collaboration with Bert Jansch, with whom he formed Pentangle, he also had a solo career before, during, and after, which began in 1961 and ended with his death in 2015. Fifty years ago, alongside artists such as Jansch, Davey Graham, Wizz Jones, and John Martyn, John Renbourn was at the forefront of the British folk revival scene, which was then flirting with the blues. His unique style blended these traditions with classical, jazz, and ethnic influences, and an unparalleled fingerpicking technique. This live recording, captured in Kyoto in 1978, was posthumously discovered in the archives of Satoro Fuji, who had taken great care in making the recording. Artist Masaki Batoh, who was present at the concert, wrote the liner notes. John Renbourn delivers a sublime performance at the Jittoku Coffee House, playing 13 songs, including magnificent covers of Reverend Gary Davis, Davey Graham, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Arthur Smith, William Byrd, and Charles Lloyd.
