Secret history - Josquin/ Victoria

Description

Tomas Luis de Victoria and Josquin Desprez were not contemporaries; they lived and worked in different countries and shared few similarities in their abstract style of composition. But across Europe, generations of musicians recognized them as soulmates, and the scores of their masses and motets circulated together in the community of lutenists. For John Potter, there lies 'the secret life of music - and in a more historical context, the secret of its real life.' In this typical project of John Potter's creativity - joined here by the Trio Mediaeval, singer Anna Maria Friman, and three exceptional virtuosos of the vihuela (a cross between the lute and the guitar) - the musician explores "what happens to music after it has been composed." The album, produced by Manfred Eicher, was recorded at the St Gerold monastery in the Austrian mountains, where Potter had previously contributed to Officium and other recordings with the Hilliard Ensemble and The Dowland Project.
