For much of this album, his 16th in 26 years, Hiatt reunites with his best band, the Goners, and takes a giant step back to his still-hungry days as a Costello-esque rocker, while tackling the soul and blues writing he perfected on Bring the Family in 1987. The withering pub rock of Slug Line from 1979 — along with a nod to fallen hero Dale Earnhardt — seeps into the title track, while the roaring guitar, courtesy of the brilliant Sonny Landreth, and the tight rhymes of "All the Lilacs in Ohio" suggest the urban side of Riding with the King from 1983. But it is with ballads like "Something Broken" and "Come Home to You" that Hiatt's musicality, songwriting, and deeply soulful voice truly shine, offering the most moving moments of this album, his most memorable in many years.
