BIRDLAND 1962

Description

This is perhaps one of the gems in the history of jazz recordings, featuring the John Coltrane Quartet: McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones, with guest Eric Dolphy. It's the John Coltrane Quartet at its peak, with Elvin Jones once again confirming his status as one of the greatest percussionists of all time. The program aired on that fiery February 1962 evening on Symphony Sid's radio show (a long-time jazz disc jockey in the United States) included three lengthy pieces: "Mr. PC," "Miles' Mode" (aka "Red Planet"), and a nearly 20-minute rendition of "My Favorite Things," which Coltrane always performed as an extended jam.
