JJULIUS’s album *Vol. 3* is a great leap into the light from the murk of the previous two volumes. There’s no time to acclimate. A tiny violin grabs your hand and pulls you into the pastoral rhythm of “Brinna ut.” JJULIUS’s records have always arrived like meteors from another planet, an impression reinforced by their being titled like compendiums of artifacts. And while *Vols. 1* and *2* carried that noticeable shade of darkness, *Vol. 3* has (almost!) shed that gloom, adding disco (“Dödsdisco”) and dream-pop (“Etopisk hallucination”) elements to his perennial favorites, Arthur Russell, African Head Charge, and The Fall. Each song was written over rhythms played by Tor Sjödén of Swedish band Viagra Boys, rhythms themselves inspired by tracks by Patrick Cowley, CAN, Count Ossie, Black Devil Disco Club, and others Julius had sent them as inspiration.
