El Malpais, named after a volcanic region in New Mexico, takes us through eight tracks into a hallucinatory and feverish universe, a worthy descendant of Jefferson Airplane and a cousin of The Black Angels and Brian Jonestown Massacre. However, Jim Younger's Spirit doesn't indulge in revivalism and, with this album, further asserts an original sound and personality. Bluesy guitars, fuzz, tambourines, heavy drums, maracas, organs, strange jaw harps—all are carried by the incantations of singer Polar Younger.
