Jim Jarmusch and Anika met in 2022 at Sacred Bones’ 15th anniversary, where they performed with SQÜRL and solo, respectively. Captivated by Anika’s voice and stage presence, the filmmaker began an artistic dialogue with the singer, who saw in him a figure of creative integrity. This mutual admiration led to a collaboration resulting in the soundtrack for Father Mother Sister Brother, marked by a haunted and singular atmosphere. The project opens with two iconic covers. Anika recorded an arranged version of Jackson Browne’s "These Days" in Berlin with the Kaleidoskop quartet, before Jarmusch offered a stripped-down reinterpretation, enriched with electric guitars. At the director’s request, they also revisited Dusty Springfield’s "Spooky" in a minimalist version—voice, double bass, finger snaps, and distorted organ—which introduces the film’s credits. Beyond these tracks, the soundtrack took shape through long improvisation sessions in Berlin, New York, and Paris. Anika explored the Wurlitzer and guitar, while Jarmusch sculpted affected guitar textures, before condensing these sessions into brief and evocative instrumental pieces. More than a narrative accompaniment, the music of Father Mother Sister Brother functions as an experimental soundscape, a floating and enveloping atmosphere, comparable to the invisible air surrounding the characters.
