"So What" is an acoustic jazz album by Jerry Garcia and mandolinist David Grisman, originally released on Grisman's Acoustic Disc label in August 1998. Garcia and Grisman had been friends and collaborators for over thirty years, with Grisman's playing notably featured on the Grateful Dead's classic album, "American Beauty." Accompanied by musicians from Grisman's regular band (bassist Jim Kerwin, Joe Craven on percussion and, on two tracks, flutist Matt Eakle), the two leaders perform three versions of Miles Davis' "So What," two of Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove," and two of Davis' "Milestones," as well as one of Grisman's "16/16." This is a rare opportunity to hear Garcia play traditional jazz, a genre he loved but rarely performed. The album received its first vinyl reissue for its 25th anniversary, a double LP including two bonus tracks, presented in a gatefold sleeve adorned with original artwork by Garcia himself.
