Journal de Leipzig, October 1, 1739: "As the composer [we skip the grand titles] Bach has resumed the direction of the Collegium Musicum at Café Zimmermann, music lovers are informed that starting tomorrow, Friday, October 2, and every following Friday, concerts will resume from 8 to 10 in the evening." Yes indeed, Café Zimmermann did exist in Leipzig, and concerts were held there. The harpsichord bar was run by Johann Sebastian Bach. The concerts were performed by the best students ("...some of whom later became great soloists..."), who could be joined by all the "musicos" (sic) who wanted to. Having a little jam session with Bach was probably not without interest.
In their second volume of the complete orchestral works of Bach, the Café Zimmermann ensemble therefore proposes, under the cover of this name, to revive and rejuvenate the spirit of these concerts given ex-abrupto - even though, according to all evidence, the ensemble has perfectly rehearsed - without a conductor, with the instrumental works of Bach that lend themselves best to this very chamber music conception. © Abeille Musique
