The great French conductor Jean Martinon (1910 -1976) is remembered as one of the greatest ambassadors of French music in the world. This is both fair and unfair, as throughout his exceptional career in Europe and especially in the United States, he marked his path by the quality of all his interpretations and the eclecticism of his repertoire. Born in Lyon, Jean Martinon studied with Charles Munch and Albert Roussel, D'Indy and Roger Desormière. A distinguished composer, he was also interested in the music of his time. The qualities of his style can be defined by a sense of phrasing of supreme elegance, an innate gift for rhythm, and a unique sense of orchestral balance. In 1963, he had the heavy task of succeeding Fritz Reiner as the head of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He will also leave an indelible memory with French orchestras, as he successively conducted the Lamoureux Concerts, Pasdeloup, Colonne, the Société des Concerts du conservatoire (future Orchestre de Paris) and for six years (from 1968 to 1973) at Radio, the Orchestre National de France. Jean Martinon will leave us the testimony of these unique recordings, mainly of French music, which will enter directly into the legend of the great records in history, dedicated to this repertoire.
