He then founded his own group and became one of the most emblematic figures of the Jazz-Fusion movement in the United States, bringing jazz violin into a modern-jazz mode. In 1982, Jean-Luc Ponty had already earned a well-deserved reputation as an avant-gardist in Jazz-Rock \u0026amp; Jazz Fusion. On Individual Choice, the violinist surrounded himself with renowned artists and guests such as George Duke (Piano), Allan Holdsworth (Guitar), Rayford Griffin (Drums) and Randy Jackson (Bass). The New Age philosophy was trendy at the time, and the hypnotic atmospheres present on Individual Choice resonated with both New Age listeners and fans of the Fusion genre. Legendary drummer Kenny Clarke compared Jean-Luc Ponty to Dizzy Gillespie. His fellow violinist Stuff Smith marveled: \"He plays the violin like Coltrane plays the saxophone.\" Born in 1942, French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty brought jazz violin into the world of modern jazz. At Frank Zappa's request, Ponty moved to the United States in 1970. Over the following years, he toured with Zappa, the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Chick Corea's \"Return to Forever.\" In the early 1970s, Ponty bought a sequencer and a synthesizer and took them on his travels so he could record new ideas. By 1982, Ponty had a well-deserved reputation as a pioneer of jazz-rock and jazz fusion. In a retrospective interview for this reissue of the 1983 album 'Individual Choice,' JLP stated: \"What I was recording on this new sequencer gave me the idea of going for a completely different concept, using these recordings as a rhythmic foundation, sometimes without drums or percussion. I planned to record a new album in which I would play all the background parts with my synthesizers and add my violin later in the studio.\" Ponty also invited a few guests to contribute to the recording. They were none other than George Duke (keyboards), Allan Holdsworth (guitar), Rayford Griffin (drums) and Randy Jackson (bass). 'Individual Choice' has been remastered by Grammy-nominated Christoph Stickeland (2023) and includes new liner notes.","brand":"Jean-Luc Ponty","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57538715287896,"sku":null,"price":20230721.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en\/products\/jean-luc-ponty_individual-choice_2023_war","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
