Description

For his first recording with Deutsche Grammophon and his return to the record after several years of absence, conductor and violinist Jean-Christophe Spinosi, accompanied by his Ensemble Matheus and mezzo-soprano Malena Ernman, presents Miroirs. An album where the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Johann Christoph Bach are alongside those of Dmitri Shostakovich, Samuel Barber, and Nicolas Bacri. So many composers whose works reflect and echo each other despite the years that separate them. Miroirs with multiple facets, these works are so many windows opened through the years. Created in particular contexts (the works of the Bachs are religious, the Lamento by Nicolas Bacri is a commission, Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony is a musical tomb, and Barber's Adagio has become the anthem for the funerals of great men), they are both scholarly and popular, episodic and absolute. More than just musical settings of sadness, they embody the ephemeral in a timeless art.
