On this side of the Atlantic, we have a hard time measuring the extent of Janet Jackson's fame. In the United States, Michael's sister is regarded as an untouchable goddess. Her records regularly sell by the millions, and at the age of thirty-five, Janet stands as a veteran of an R&B genre she witnessed being born. What does she have left to prove? Innovation has never been the strong suit of the team surrounding her, and that is not the point of this "All For You."
The intention is simply to legitimize her sovereignty by giving her audience what they expect. That is, funk tunes softened with pop syrup delivered amidst a bunch of ballads spiced with sexy vocals.
Here, nothing very surprising, but the whole has a certain quality. Her producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, know how to deliver commercial appeal without losing a certain class.
