Half a century later, it still provides the listener with the same sense of novelty and excitement as when it was first discovered.\n\nThe album marked the arrival of four Norwegian musicians, all exceptional improvisers (Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen, and Jon Christensen) into the nascent ECM stable. Each of them began a long-term collaboration with the label, which would allow their fame and influence to extend far beyond the borders of their native country. In the long improvised sequences that make up the bulk of *Afric Pepperbird*, driven by the rhythmic animation of the organic pairing of Christensen and Andersen, it is most often Rypdal's guitar that takes center stage with its tense chords and proposes the musical directions.\n\nThe entire group is at the peak of its expressiveness, but it is Garbarek, then immersed in the effervescence of free jazz, who makes the greatest impression. At the time of the album's release, *DownBeat* critic Joe Klee wrote: \"Garbarek must be reckoned with! I would say that since Django Reinhardt there has not been a European jazz musician as original and avant-garde as this young Norwegian.\"","brand":"Jan Garbarek Quartet","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55396545233240,"sku":null,"price":20240301.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/0602445053179.jpg?v=1760385161","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en\/products\/jan-garbarek-quartet_afric-pepperbird-luminessence-serie_2024_uni","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
