Born to Czechoslovakian parents on January 18, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, singer Irene Kral was the younger sister of pianist Roy Kral. Irene sang with touring orchestras led by Woody Herman and Chubby Jackson and worked with Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton, and Shelly Manne. Recorded for the small Ava label in 1963, *Better Than Anything* features her accompanied solely by a dynamic rhythm section led by pianist Junior Mance.
