Work on Hysteria began at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when Indigo was stuck in lockdown in Australia, waiting for her US visa to be renewed. After moving back to New York in Spring 2021, Indigo Sparke finished writing the 14 songs and contacted producer Aaron Dessner. Aaron, who also contributes instrumentation along with multi-instrumentalist and longtime collaborator Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Muzz), was fully involved in bringing Hysteria to life. With Indigo's powerful voice at the forefront, Hysteria also features guitars and layers of instrumentation that practically act as the album's lungs, giving each note breath. While her previous album Echo bore the mark of producer Adrianne Lenker's spectral and intimate approach, Hysteria has more body and is warm like a raging fire, as Aaron's instrumentation perfectly complements Indigo's writing. The result is timeless music. While the world Indigo Sparke inhabits is a rich sonic tapestry that draws the listener into circular spaces with minimalist textures and seemingly endless harmonic suspensions, what is most clearly exposed is her voice and the forms of the songs.
