Power Of Soul is the third album as a bandleader of the legendary jazz drummer Idris Muhammad, dating from 1974. He began his solo career in 1970 after years of working as a sideman for the biggest names in jazz such as George Benson, Lou Donaldson, Grant Green, Ahmad Jamal, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. This album was produced by Creed Taylor, founder of CTI, and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. The Blue Note sound architect developed a deep relationship with Muhammad and played an important role in refining his sound. But don't forget the rest of the lineup; the recording features arrangements and compositions by keyboard legend Bob James and smooth jazz founder Grover Washington Jr., complemented by performances from Randy Brecker, Joe Beck, and Ralph MacDonald. Overall, it's clear why Muhammad's works have ended up as samples on so many hip-hop records.
