Since “River”, Ibeyi's first success in 2014, the sisters have seen their career take off. Their second album, Ash, was nominated for the IMPALA European Album of the Year award in 2017. Between appearing in Beyoncé's clip “All Night”, an invitation from Karl Lagerfeld to sing in Cuba during a Chanel fashion show, shows at Coachella, and collaboration with Orelsan in “Note pour trop tard”, Ibeyi is making a place for themselves in the music industry. Unclassifiable, the duo is back and offers “ASET”, a track where soul, contemporary RnB, Afro-Cuban, jazz, and many other musical influences blend.
“ASET” is a modern lament where the melody intensifies every second, between sensuality, urgency, and spirituality. IBeyi summons Isis, also known as Aset. A symbol of sacred knowledge, the Egyptian goddess represents resurrection and absolute love. In mythology, Aset steals the knowledge of the gods to resurrect and make Osiris, her lover, a god. But in a more modern reflection, the piece sings the voice of Aset. After years of devotion, a melodious cry resonates, between pain and power: "Without my light, you're nobody, without my love, who loves you?" What love has she received in return?
And if this piece delves into intimate reflections, their new album Offering is just as much. Co-produced by Michael Brun, Khalil Cherradi, Pablo Pablo, Jason Pounds, and Jack Peñate, the Ibeyi sisters dive into their story for a highly personal project.
