First of the modern novelists, Fyodor Dostoevsky is among the greatest Russian writers of the 19th century. In "Notes from Underground," he tells the story of a recluse who observes the world from his basement in a low-angle view. The narrator spits out his words with bitterness, his stubborn refusal of happiness, pouring out his anxieties and hatred towards humanity.
