While "Precious Dream" still bears Hot Garbage's signature psychedelic sound, the Toronto band's second album hurtles headlong into a bleak post-punk world of blazing riffs, exploring themes like anxiety, loss, the resilience of the human soul, and the ups and downs of solitude. From the outset, the elegant brutalist sonic architecture hints at an escape route, with perfectly cryptic poetic flights serving as surreal signage. Some 36 minutes later, it docks at a strangely pleasant emptiness, but also an uncontrollable desire to get lost again in this magnificent musical ambush. True to his reputation, prolific producer Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck, No Joy, !!!, etc.) – with whom Hot Garbage recorded their acclaimed debut album "RIDE" – highlights the band's musicality, brilliantly imprinting their fascinating "mystery rock" blend, which sets in motion a parallel world where phones are deceptive, lobotomy has its merits, and tunnels defy the rules of space-time. Anyone who appreciates the music of Sonic Youth, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, or Joy Division must wander confusedly through this romantic yet dystopian opus; a certain sweet and cathartic resolution awaits them there.
