Holy Church Of The Ecstatic Soul - A Higher Power: Gospel, Funk & Soul at the Crossroads 1971-83
Description
A Soul Jazz compilation in homage to American soul music.
Soul Jazz Records' "Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul: Gospel, Funk and Soul at the Crossroads 1971-83" draws on the strong connections between Black American gospel and soul music, showing how the sensibilities of gospel artists such as Shirley Caeser, Dorothy Norwood, Andrae Crouch, and others transposed into secular soul music during this period.
Most of the most famous soul artists - from Aretha Franklin to Al Green, from The Staple Singers to Sam Cooke - all drew their musical inspiration from their religious upbringing. This album examines the importance of the links between the Black church and soul music in the creation of the latter and highlights some of the many important (but also little-known) gospel artists who crossed this boundary between sacred music and soul, funk, and disco in the 1970s and early 1980s.
