This edition contains one of the best albums by the master of song Hoagy Carmichael (1899-1981), "Hoagy Sings Carmichael" released in 1956. The singer-songwriter is supported by modern jazz musicians like Harry Edison, Art Pepper, and Jimmy Rowles, and the beautiful arrangements are made by Johnny Mandel. The American composer and author Alec Wilder described Hoagy Carmichael as the "most talented, inventive, sophisticated, and jazz-oriented of all the great artists" of pop songs from the first half of the 20th century. Hoagy Carmichael is one of the most famous songwriters of Tin Pan Alley in the 1930s and was among the first singer-songwriters of the media era to use new communication technologies (television, use of electronic microphones, and sound recordings). He composed several hundred songs, including about fifty that achieved hit record status. He is best known for composing the titles "Stardust," "Georgia on My Mind," "The Nearness of You," and "Heart and Soul" (in collaboration with lyricist Frank Loesser), four of the most recorded American songs of all time. "Ole Buttermilk Sky" was nominated for the Academy Awards in 1946 and "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening" (lyrics by Mercer) won the Academy Award for "Best Original Song" in 1951.
