Hipsway is a Scottish pop rock band active between 1984 and 1989. It was formed in Glasgow by Johnny McElhone, former bassist of Altered Images, along with singer Grahame Skinner, drummer Harry Travers (both former members of the band Kites) and guitarist Pim Jones.
The quartet signed with Mercury Records and released two singles in 1985, The Broken Years and Ask the Lord. It was with the third single, The Honeythief released in 1986, that the band achieved success, reaching 17th in the UK charts and 19th in the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, while the first album, Hipsway, was released, reaching 42nd place in the UK. A new version of Ask the Lord was released, followed by the single Long White Car, which achieved moderate success.
Johnny McElhone left Hipsway to focus on his new project: Texas. The band continued without him and recorded a second album Scratch the Surface in 1989, with Stephen Ferrera replacing Harry Travers on drums.
However, the album was a commercial failure and the band split up shortly after its release.
This new remastered edition for the 30th anniversary of the release includes a 2nd CD with 15 bonus tracks (Mix, 12' versions, Alternative, Extended,).
