HEY!TONAL is an experimental group created by Mitch Cheney (Rumah Sakit, Sweep the Leg Johnny) and Alan Mills (Chiisai-oto). Through a unique creative process, each band member was recorded separately between 2006 and 2008 across a wide geographical area encompassing New York, Chicago, St. Augustine in Florida, San Diego, and Nantes in France. Several emblematic figures of the independent and experimental scene make up this extraordinary group. In addition to the founding duo, the individual talents of Dave Davison (Maps & Atlases), Kevin Shea (Storm & Stress), Theo Katsaounis (Joan of Arc), and, on the opening track only, Kenseth Thibideau (Sleeping People, Rumah Sakit) and Julien Fernandez (Chevreuil) are featured. Originally released in 2009 on CD by the Africantape label, the album has been remastered by Carl Saff and is now available for the first time on vinyl. Mitch Cheney initially conceived HEY!TONAL as a project to be called Drummers' Perspectives. In 2006, he had the idea (using the Reason application) of replacing drum samples with guitar and dulcimer samples. He then composed melodies based on drum rhythms, as opposed to the standard songwriting process that favors the inverse approach: playing drums to accompany melodies. It was later that he met Alan Mills, a complementary visionary and creator, with whom he would form the core of the project. Over a long period of work, they composed the eight tracks of the album by combining the personalities of the musicians they recorded individually and in different locations. The album Hey!Tonal is the second release in Computer Students' Anatomical Reissues series, which dedicates itself to an aesthetic and analytical re-examination of works. This double white vinyl edition is presented in a superb gatefold sleeve accompanied by a large poster, all packaged in the label's now classic sealed aluminum sleeve.
