And goodness, here is The Magic Flute in French! In 1791, in a suburb of Vienna, Mozart created his Singspiel Die Zauberflöte. The libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, who also directs it in his theater, aims to speak to the popular audience in German. Thanks to the dramatic and dreamlike qualities of the work, and Mozart's brilliant music, it surpassed a hundred performances in a year and its success was universal. But to captivate all audiences, its strength was to speak to the spectators in their own language – and not in Italian like the court opera. This is what this production offers, in a fully French version, directed by Cécile Roussat and Julien Lubek and conducted by Hervé Niquet with a sparkling team: suddenly, Mozart's work takes on the tone of French Opéra-Comique.
