"The Portable Herman Dune" Vol. 3 is the final installment of Herman Dune's acoustic anthology, showcasing 22 years of songwriting laid bare, stripped down to the bone. While sonically naked, the songs are brimming with emotion and life. Overall, "The Portable Herman Dune" is raw and direct, with the songs played as naturally as Ivar wrote them. His voice has grown grittier after two decades of singing, and his guitar playing is unadorned. All recordings were made live in Ivar's wooden studio cabin in San Pedro, the port of Los Angeles. You can hear old floorboards creak, a dog bark, or neighbors driving loud motorcycles. Feet tap, birds sing, and the cat meows when the songs quiet down. Harmonica and mandolin are subtle additions to the core of the songs. And a little sparkle thanks to some guest friends; on Vol. 3, we have: Caitlin Rose, Mayon (David Ivar's partner), and JULIE DOIRON, who provide vocal counterpoint. Each volume has a slightly different character. The closing song is the only cover in the anthology. It's "My Way," a global hit for Frank Sinatra and famously covered by Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious.
