For Clara: Works by Schumann & Brahms

Description

Hélène Grimaud is a captivating artist. For many years, the French pianist has charmed the classical world with her sensual and intense playing, as well as her unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her vast musical repertoire includes not only the most famous piano works that allow pianists to demonstrate their brilliance on stages around the world, but also contemporary pieces, such as those by Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov. Inspired by the eccentric alter ego of the romantic storyteller E. T. A. Hoffmann, Robert Schumann's Kreisleriana is a work Hélène Grimaud has known since adolescence and has already recorded. Yet, as she quotes, "One can spend an entire life with such a work and always find something new in it." Revisiting it here, she has paired it with two pieces by Schumann's protégé, Johannes Brahms, including a set of songs in which Brahms distills his unrequited love for Clara, Schumann's widow. The artist is accompanied on this album by a sensational young baritone, Konstantin Krimmel.
