Liquorice

Description

The cover of Liquorice, Hatchie's third album, features a spontaneous portrait of Harriette Pilbeam, laughing with faded scarlet lipstick. This impromptu snapshot, captured with a simple digital camera, perfectly reflects a deliberately raw album, carried by themes of desire, nostalgia, and melancholy. Written between Brisbane and Melbourne from 2022 to 2024, the album shows a new intention: to compose without precise references, allowing the songs to mature naturally. Rediscovering the melodic simplicity of her beginnings and embracing her limitations as strengths, Pilbeam chose to work with a single collaborator. She selected producer and artist Melina Duterte, also known as Jay Som, particularly recognized for her participation in boygenius's Grammy win. Brighter and more playful than its predecessor Giving the World Away, Liquorice explores the intensity of brief passions and romantic impulses sometimes doomed to fail. Hatchie celebrates the exhilaration of romantic obsession and its contradictions, comparable to the contrasting flavors of licorice: sweet, bitter, and salty all at once. Red vinyl edition exclusive to independent record stores.
