Description

Rafaël Kubelik was the first to complete a full cycle of Gustav Mahler's works starting in 1960, thus bringing him out of fifty years of purgatory. He regarded Mahler as one of the most important precursors of 20th-century music. - Of Mahler's nine symphonies, several are appreciated on par with those of Beethoven, but the 7th remains a work with a more secretive access and is rarely performed. This recording is all the more valuable as it was made "live" in Munich in 1976. - It is a purely instrumental work that moves from darkness to light, a transformation emphasized by the choice of evolving tonality. The funeral march in E minor is followed by the fleeting waltz of the scherzo, then the serene poetry of the andante leads to the triumphant rondo in major of the finale, always with that extraordinary Mahlerian orchestration. - DDD 73:25/German-English booklet -
