Here we have three musicians with such a rich shared history that they might as well share the same blood. Each being a fully accomplished solo artist in their own right, there is a dynamic roadmap of collaborative work, both with others and among themselves. The Gunn-Truscinski duo has been an official venture for nearly a decade and a half, producing a fabulous series of albums for this label. Truscinski and Nace, along with Jake Meginsky, form xo4, a band dating back to the early part of this century. All three, with the addition of Kim Gordon, appeared on a record documenting their live music from Andy Warhol's film "Kiss." And so on "Glass Band," the record in question, they come together. It’s a homogeneous gathering, to the point that, despite the distinct instrumentation, it is sometimes difficult to tell who is doing what. This is true even for the LP cover, which features Nace's illustrations adorned with Gunn's familiar handwriting. There is no leader, there are no accompanists; we encounter highly developed musical intellects that blend in such a refined way that they completely dispose of expectations in order to get straight to the heart of the crucial activity of creation. What a pleasure it is to be able to nod along and laugh at the futility of trying to categorize this art into a genre. What joy to recognize that it is impossible to say what kind of music it is. It doesn’t remind me of other records on my sagging shelves, but of moods and places, memories from long ago and memories yet to be made. Even for those who are intimately familiar with the output of these three, "Glass Band" offers the delight of surprise. Something new. Imagine that.
