Under the name Green-House, musicians Olive Ardizoni and Michael Flanagan explore human nature and the natural world through a joyful and dynamic union. Their collaborative process is rich and complex: Ardizoni is often drawn to melody, Flanagan to harmony. Their strength lies in the intertwining of their ideas, achieving a depth that surpasses the simple sum of their parts. For their debut album on their new label, Ghostly International, Green-House develops and refines their art with unprecedented freedom and fluidity, defying genres. More active, percussive, and emotionally charged, their instrumental music is characterized by flowing sonic masses and grandiose soundscapes. Hinterlands aligns with the beauty of the world with a radical and provocative sincerity. Since 2020, through a catalog of acclaimed releases on the pioneering Los Angeles music label Leaving Records, the duo has been interested in sound environments, seeking spaces that are both intimate and distant through organic and synthetic instrumentation, high-definition sound design, and "singular melodies, crafted with the patience and method of a gardener," as Pitchfork wrote. Green-House defies categorization. Ardizoni and Flanagan claim neither New Age nor spirituality, and the ambient label seems increasingly restrictive to them given the richness of their tracks, which are closer to IDM, or even contemporary classical music on their new album. What remains intrinsic is a profound sense of wonder, or this "'idea of legitimizing, within music, certain emotions often neglected in art, such as happiness and joy," explains Ardizoni, whose eclectic personality shines through even without words.
