The fascinating and unique mass of Antoine Brumel by the Ensemble Graindelavoix!For their new album, Graindelavoix and Bjorn Schmelzer have turned to the astonishing Missa Et ecce terræ motus for 12 voices by Antoine Brumel, "monstrous and unique," in Schmelzer's words. Recorded during their 2023 European tour, the ensemble added four wind instrumentalists to their usual singers and, above all, invited Portuguese composer and guitarist Manuel Mota, who offers intriguing soundscapes that blend perfectly with the spectacular singing. Bjorn Schmelzer: "This Mass was an unprecedented work for its time, totally incomparable to what was being composed then." In the booklet essay, Schmelzer highlights the similarities between Brumel's composition and Pieter Bruegel's drawing The Resurrection of Christ, thus offering a fascinating new approach to one of the most remarkable and crucial musical creations of the Renaissance.
