Richard Strauss (1864-1949): Alpine Symphony Op.64 Kent Nagano and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra first met in 1993, when they worked together on Mahler's Third Symphony. Kent Nagano and the orchestra immediately connected, and Mr. Nagano has since regularly conducted the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra over the past decades. When Kent Nagano was appointed Principal Guest Conductor starting in autumn 2013, one of his ideas that turned into a project was the performance and recording of major orchestral works by Richard Strauss in connection with the composer's 150th anniversary in 2014. Having worked for a long time as Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper, Kent Nagano has gained a unique insight into Strauss's music and the Straussian tradition. He was also able to obtain information from authentic sources within the Strauss family, which is obviously a valuable asset. The orchestra was therefore technically and musically familiar with this magnificent score when the concerts were scheduled with Kent Nagano in 2014, including those featured in this recording.
