On Gong Gong Gong’s explosive debut, Phantom Rhythm, the minimalist duo from Beijing crafted an incredible sound, devoid of drums and inspired by the blues, Sahelian guitars, New York no-wave, Cantonese lion dance percussion, and, surprisingly and incongruously, techno. Comprising Tom Ng and Joshua Frank, the duo formed in Beijing in 2015, making music with the most pared-down means: a guitar and a bass intertwining riffs to create drumless grooves. Their inspirations range from Bo Diddley to African and South Asian folk music, psychedelic drone, and electronic music structures. With Phantom Rhythm Remixed, Gong Gong Gong brings to life a concept the duo had imagined and planned since the release of their first album, bringing together their favorite Chinese electronic music producers to remix Phantom Rhythm in its entirety. This global collaboration includes Yu Su (Vancouver / Kaifeng), Zaliva-D, Simon Frank, Howie Lee (Beijing), Mong Tong, Scattered Purgatory (Taipei), Knopha (Xiamen), Wu Zhuoling (Chengdu), Angel Wei (Copenhagen), and P.E. (Brooklyn). The record traces a common thread, organically expanding Gong Gong Gong's palette into ambient club tracks, rhythmic dance, cinematic soundscapes, and bit-crushed doom psych.
