The Odd Couple

Description

With its cinematic origins, The Odd Couple (2008) is the natural title for the second album by a duo whose recordings are often compared to film scores. Their biggest hit, 2006's "Crazy," was even built around a sample from the soundtrack of a spaghetti western. Yet, after the success of 2006’s excellent St Elsewhere, the collaboration between singer Thomas 'Cee-Lo Green' Callaway and producer Brian 'Danger Mouse' Burton has become a permanent fixture. Two years later, The Odd Couple stands proudly alongside its predecessor. The basic recipe hasn't been radically altered: Danger Mouse's shimmering beats and snap-crackle-pop production still provide the perfect platform for Cee-Lo's powerful soul wail. In fact, the duo has refined and sharpened their approach to a razor's edge. The key lies in the way musical flavors intertwine: the Arthur Lee – meets – N.E.R.D. balladry of "Surprise," the jubilant gospel
soul
synthpop mix on "Going On," the Otis Redding meets Outkast blend on the single "Run (I'm a Natural Disaster)." The cumulative effect is that of a band whose bag holds an inexhaustible supply of happy surprises.
