The result is a sonic tapestry of that exchange, woven from conceptual threads of the celestial interior, mortality and the realm beyond the stars. The fusion is effortless, but it is the constant presence of Gloria’s voice that imbues the album with its full power. Throughout the album there is an innate understanding of how a lyric can sharpen an emotional truth if it passes through the right chordal color. Like a sunbeam piercing a spiderweb to reveal its intricate complexity, Gloria's lyrics and melodies aim to illuminate truths that lie deep within oneself... a process that binds us all to the universal. The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who influenced her, wrote extensively about truth as something intrinsically subjective, which is less about the concrete reality of what one believes than about how the believer experiences it. Dean Hurley, a regular collaborator with David Lynch, defines the soundscape for each track on the album, bringing a layered, ethereal atmosphere that envelops, frames, and holds Oliveira’s voice. With its impressionistic synths, shimmering guitars, and celestial sonorities, Oceans of Time is at times reminiscent of the foundational dreampop of 4AD acts like Cocteau Twins and Lush. The album is especially sensitive to the connections between the physical and transcendental realms, it does what dreampop does best: making the veil between these two worlds a little thinner.
