The majority of the album's tracks thus result from improvisations, in very free music, at times introspective and extroverted, with the foundation laid by Guidi's piano. However, the eponymous track Ida Lupino is a work written by Carla Bley, who directed Petrella within a big band, and a tribute to Paul Bley, who inspired many improvisers, particularly Guidi. Another written piece, Per i morti di Reggio Emilia (For the death of Reggio Emilia), is a protest song by Turin folk singer Fausto Amodei.
