Zelmira is the last opera that Rossini wrote for Naples, knowing that it would also serve as his calling card for Vienna where he performed a few concerts. Driven by the desire to reconcile the incompatibility between Italian melody and German harmony, Rossini employed bold and exciting harmonies and a number of dazzling orchestral effects in this tragedy where a daughter saves her father, the King, and her son from the usurpers of the throne. The opera was acclaimed wherever it was performed, and this recording features the revised and triumphant version from Paris.
