Gérard Caussé, the greatest French violist of the last 30 years, was trained as a child to listen to the Suites by Bach by his viola teacher, who welcomed him to each lesson with a Suite played on the viola. The child's imagination would do the rest: these Suites became the monument offered to his future as a violist. Years have passed, but the 6 Cello Suites by Bach are still linked to the musician's destiny of Gérard Caussé, who regularly plays them today on the viola with great success. Not for musicological reasons, but out of the timeless passion of the artist for this work and for the belief he holds in his own instrument. One only needs to look at the 4th Suite! So many cellists say they are prey to its particular technical difficulty. This Suite, on the viola, is undeniably fluid, it sounds obvious. Thus, Gérard Caussé offers another light, another color, but also another diction, another articulation, another reading. And it is in this way that Gérard Caussé associated this very personal search with the poem by Rainer Maria Rilke: “To write a single verse, one must have seen many cities, men, and things..”, a long poem of inner journey. From then on, Laurent Terzieff appeared to him as evident and became a great companion on the road. They shared a concert-reading that was a major artistic encounter, for the artists and for the audience. Terzieff became for Caussé the one who would bring a breath to the immense density of each of the Suites. Immediately endorsing the project, Laurent Terzieff asked Gérard Caussé to come and rehearse without delay. But in the weeks that followed, the actor passed away. Laurent Terzieff leaves, in this 2 CD recording of the 6 Suites by Bach, his last reading meant to be listened to: the poems of R.M. Rilke, blending his voice with that of J.S. Bach, carried by the viola of Gérard Caussé.
