Description
Guillaume Tell is a legendary hero of Swiss independence. The bailiff of Schwyz and Uri, Herman Gessler, in the service of the Austrian Empire, attempts to reaffirm the authority of the Habsburgs over the region. He has a pole erected topped with his hat, demanding that the inhabitants salute it as if he were actually present. Guillaume Tell passes by the hat, ignoring it.
