In Schubert, there is much more non-matter, more silences, sometimes literal repetitions. It is a comparatively simpler fabric. In Beethoven, the disturbances are more regular; Schubert is much more surprising. Sometimes, it feels like he stumbles, like he misses a step. That’s why his descendant is Thelonious Monk. It may be strange, but this music that stops, that listens, that seeks aggregates, that vibrates with its own vibration. The same processes of repetition can be found, with limping, added notes, deviations, distorted mirrors, consciously exploited mistakes. In the famous take of “Around Midnight,” where the tape was rolling unbeknownst to him, we hear him searching for his way, just like Schubert, whose processes sometimes seem naive, but of a learned, magical naivety, to be preserved.
