Trans-disciplinary artist born in New York and raised in the southeastern Tamil region of India, Ganyava has already garnered praise from the Wall Street Journal and the Guardian, and also took part in Sault's live formation in 2023. Today she presents the ambitious "Daughter Of A Temple" on LEITER, Nils Frahm's label. Recorded in 2002 at the Moore's Opera House in Houston, she invited friends and fellow musicians to take part in a gathering centered around the concept of devotion: inspired by her studies of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda's musico-philosophy, she had promised to invite anyone who evoked it around her to participate in the sessions. Bringing the Hindu tradition of harikatha (a blend of music, storytelling, poetry, and dance) into the 21st century, she draws on a vast array of collaborators, including Shabaka Hutchings, Esperanza Spalding, Vijay Iyer, Immanuel Wilkins, and Peter Sellars. Edited and mixed by Nils Frahm at the Funkhaus studio in 2024, the resulting album is as innovative as it is moving, a blend of spiritual jazz and sacred South Asian music.
