Description

Oratorio pasticcio in 3 acts.Giuseppe was composed by Mayr in 1829 for the end-of-year concerts of the Bergamo music academy, which he directed. It was inspired by a biblical opera that had been a great success, Joseph by Méhul, created in Paris in 1807, which included prayers, hymns, and arias of great simplicity. Mayr, however, drew from a much broader musical repertoire, incorporating grand arias, duets, a cavatina, and a final chorus. He also makes numerous references to popular melodies by his contemporaries Donizetti, Rossini, and Bellini, as befits an oratorio pasticcio.
