My piano teacher was the wife of the cellist of the famed LaSalle Quartet. I used to lie on the rug in their living room as an elementary student while they rehearsed, quietly following along, hearing how the viola part fit in with the first violin, or the second violin and cello. And since I started studying composition at age eight, almost all of my music has always focused on four melodic parts – so string quartets are a natural musical configuration for me.The Pali word ‘sati’ means ‘mindfulness’ or ‘awareness.’ During this global year-and-a-half of impermanence, I have found refuge in my meditation practice – to ‘relax, allow, and observe’ my mental habits as they arise and pass away – mostly grasping, aversion, and returning to unskillful habits. I have felt very supported by online silent at-home retreats and sitting groups. These have given me some moments of strength to remain in the present and to know that most things in the world are out of my control – and I can call on my practice to be with my experiences instead of reacting to them. Not so much carried away by the winds of the world: pleasure and pain; loss and gain; fame and shame; and praise and blame.The movements of the Sati Suite are inspired by and musically reflect some aspects of my long-standing Vipassana meditation practice. A few movement titles are self-evident, but I will explain a few here. ‘Know That You Are’ is from one of the most basic instructions, ‘When you are sitting, know that you are sitting.’ ‘Monkey Mind’ is the discursive mental chatter that often occurs during meditation. ‘Rising, Falling’ relates to the movement in my chest that is my meditation anchor; the bass line rises and falls throughout the piece. The god ‘Mara’ tempted the Buddha with wine, women, and riches as he was attempting to attain enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. And ‘Begin Again’ comes from another instruction, ‘When your mind wanders, just connect with the sensation of the breath – and begin again.’I hope you will take the time to slow down and listen to the suite in its entirety – not so easy when we live in a world of seemingly urgent distractions and sound bites. It has been a joy to create this music and I sincerely wish you an awakened heart, peace, and equanimity.\"--- Fred Hersch ---.","brand":"Fred Hersch","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55310364377432,"sku":null,"price":20220128.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/0753957219918_2a3eeddb-70c2-45bc-9baf-afba1a4d924a.jpg?v=1760316966","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en\/products\/fred-hersch_breath-by-breath-vinyl_2022_lad","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
