Opening his disc with the "Bagatelle without Tonality," played like a whimsical caprice where a few memories of the Mephisto-Walzer still flutter, Cédric Tiberghien approaches the more experimental side of Liszt's piano. Music that seeks silence and gilds a carillon in the Wiegenlied, where it sinks into a funereal lagoon where the echoes of Tristan diffract in the wave: once heard, this Lugubre "gondola II" is unforgettable. The six pieces that precede the "Third Year of Pilgrimage," a suite of tombs and Roman gardens, anticipate the funereal yet wonderful tone that asserts itself from the gentle chime of "l'Angelus!" This mystical Liszt fits like a glove on the filigree piano played by Cédric Tiberghien: the depth of the timbres is lightened by an evocative art, opening the keyboard wide without ever weighing it down. The introspection of the two funeral marches, "Aux cyprès de la Villa d’Este" – which Liszt notes as "threnodies" – does not, however, lead to such sensual "Jeux d’eaux," whose sound balances of gold and silver reveal the degree of subtlety that Cédric Tiberghien's palette reaches today. But the death that prays returns to conclude the cycle, which benefits here from leaving all eloquence behind to seek emotion in a certain abstract nudity, evident in the Marche funèbre for Maximilian I.
